Background Context

Our generation is the most advanced in technology, literacy, religion, charity, affluence and many other areas than any previous one. Sadly too, we are also that generation that is the most corrupt, wounded, hurting, traumatized, broken, depressed and killed with ease. Increasing levels of unresolved crisis and conflict is leading many to avoidable cycles of losses, pain, bitterness, vengeance, reprisal and backwardness.

This general insecurity and its resulting negative impact are fast replacing known positive values, human dignity, credible liberty, compassion, sacredness of life, healthy community living and true human development. While this damage is real, a bigger percentage of world population, that is youthful and born in this abnormality is beginning to accept it as normal without a full perception of what normalcy need to truly be. Except this anomaly is addressed, the sure consequence of humans leading creation into self-destruction only remains a matter of time.

We can avoid this by collective success of attainable visions

We can avoid this by collective success of attainable visions

The overwhelmed leading communities in misery

Most leaders are not prepared to lead through crisis. Religious communities, who are expected to act as true representatives of God before the people, and agents for expressing His loving nature, easily become part of the problem rather than its solution. Along with this, conflicts, disunity, unfair resource allocation, exploitation and injustice have kept many in lack and inappropriate living conditions

As a result, many communities with rich resource potentials are not empowered to develop and benefit from them, leading to more avoidable poverty, backwardness and misery

All these negatively affect quality of life, peace, stability and progress of many in the midst of rich human capacity and material resources globally. Additionally, life’s realities, self-centredness, poverty mindsets and scarcity of transforming leaders to humbly serve and transparently steward available resources remains a major challenge for most of society.

The few that are willing to make a positive difference are overwhelmed or overstretched by the extent and complexity of this problem, lack of clarity on where to begin and who to truly collaborate with

Increase in creative solutions for social problems needed

Thirdly, the well-intended activities of various specialized agencies, united nations organizations, faith-based institutions, civil society and community-based organizations in addressing these issues still record less than satisfactory results. Obviously, broader efforts are required from more like-minded people of burden as true sustainable solutions can’t be achieved by only a few

Healing & Transforming Leadership (HTL) is conceived to contribute a unique input to on-going endeavours toward addressing these issues. Our contribution is in the areas of:

  1. Healing, Reconciliation and Peace -Building;
  2. Equipping of Transforming Leaders;
  3. Multiplying of Obedient Disciples;
  4. Mobilizing and Empowering Community Transformation

Our Response

From the above context, the burden to contribute to a leadership with focus on healing and transformation became the preoccupation to which Ben and Lydia Akpera transited. He moved back home (Nigeria) in Dec 2007, with family, and has been clarifying the vision, piloting projects and nurturing the burden that has now birthed HTL.

Today, Ben and Lydia Akpera, his spouse, serve in leading teams of volunteer movement leaders that are labouring to heal, reconcile and build peaceful communities, multiply obedient disciples, equip transforming leaders and empower communities to own and facilitate their own wholistic transformation.

This will benefit the African continent and nations lying beyond. Earlier as volunteer, Ben had coordinated Micah Network for Africa Region, contributed to other organizations and served in leadership coaching and mentoring within this period while Lydia trained and mentored young people and women for improved lives.

Results from pilot projects over the years have been very fulfilling. HTL is to be a platform that gives more like-minded people and organizations opportunity to join in collaborating to see the fulfilment of this overwhelming vision. No one leader, community, organization nor generation can achieve this alone.
